MP'S LETTER: HONG KONG : MS VERTUCCI

Problem

1.

Whether the Lord Privy Seal should agree to see

Mr Robert Parry MP and an unspecified number of colleagues

concerning Ms Vertucci who is not being allowed to remain

and work in Hong Kong.

Recommendation

2.

I recommend that the Lord Privy Seal see the MPs and

reply on the lines of the attached draft.

Background and Argument

3.

Ms Vertucci is an American journalist who has worked in

Hong Kong for 4 years. The Lord Privy Seal is aware of the case.

4.

Mr Parry wrote to the Lord Privy Seal on 11 February

asking the Lord Privy Seal to see him and an unspecified number

of colleagues.

I understand that 5.15 pm on 18 February in the

House of Commons has been put aside for this.

5.

Mr Parry also asked that Ms Vertucci should not be

repatriated before this meeting. Ms Vertucci is at present

allowed to remain until 19 February, not 24 February as Mr Parry

asserts. It is however most unlikely that she will be required

to leave on 20 February.

voluntarily.

6.

It is the intention to get her to leave

We have in the meantime reported this development

to Hong Kong and asked for a report on the present situation.

I will submit a brief for the meeting later this week,

recommending that the Lord Privy Seal does not agree to any

intervention with the Hong Kong Government on this issue.
