JOINT STATEMENT

3 February 1932

ANNEX C

We, the undersigned, are very concerned about the Hong Kong Government's refusal to grant Ms. Christine Vertucci en extension of her employment vise. We strongly support Christine's appeal and urge government to allow her to continue her valuable

work in Hong Kong.

:

We believe that Christine connot properly file on appeal agaițist

this decision without knowing the reasons why it was made nor

con other citizens clearly know which activities government will

not allow. The right granted to the Director of Immigration not to

disclose the reasons for his actions deprives Christine and others

of the right of genuine appeal. Therefore, we call on the Hong Kong

Government to disclose the reasons for having token this oction

against Christine. We also call for a review of the sections of

the Immigration Ordinance which allow the Director of Immigration

to withhold from on individual the reasons behind his decision to

grant or deny extensions of stay.

We strongly believe that the Immigration Department acted in on

unfair and discourteous manner by withholding its decision from

Christine until the last hour of the last day before her visa was

to expire.

until

We believe that what has happened to Christine might be part of a

brooder clompdown on those speaking cut on social justice issues

in Hong Kong or in the region. We oppose any oction token by any

government aimed at suppressing the efforts of people defending bosic

human rights.
