BRITISH NATIONALITY ACT 1981: RIGHT OF ABODE INDEPENDENCIES.

1.

Because of statements made by Ministers in Parliament during the passage of the British Nationality Bill about the right of abode in dependent territories we need to ask governors to amend their immigration law in such a way as to grant the right of abode to those British Dependent Territories citizens who acquire that status through a connection with a particular dependency. I should be grateful if you would write to each governor for whose territory you are responsible (except in the case of WIAD, Bermuda about which I am minuting separately to Mr Hope) on the lines of the attached 'A'Fretached

2.

On 16 February 1981 we sought the personal views of governors on the question of right of abode. Apart from the governors of Bermuda and the Cayman Islands none foresaw great difficulty in amending their immigration law in the way we wish. I believe that we should remind them of the previous correspondence and I accordingly attach a draft PERSONAL letter 'B'.
