AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: HONG KONG

1.

I had a call on 27 October from Mr David Weissbrodt, Assistant Legal Adviser with Amnesty International in London. (Tel No: 836 7788) He said he had a number of questions he would like to put to our legal experts concerning eg, differences between Hong Kong law and UK law and one or two more detailed aspects of law in Hong Kong. He made a point of saying that this was not in connection with any particular issue.

2.

I discussed with Mr Burrows and with UND, making the point that Mr Weissbrodt may well be doing some research in connection with Hong Kong's closed camp policy for Vietnamese refugees of which there has already been some criticism. As a result I telephoned Mr Weissbrodt back and suggested that he first approach the Hong Kong Government Office and that if he failed there to obtain the information he was seeking he should write to me with his specific questions. We would then do our best to answer them. If I hear from him again I will let you know.
