The Home Office say that prior to 1979 no figures for refugees were collated, let alone published. They claim that the rough figures they were working on at the time have since been proved to be pure guesswork and quite useless. They can, however, give an estimate of 3000 for those who came to the UK under the Latin America programme.

They are also unable to help over figures for refugee settlement. As you may know, refugees are accepted for settlement only after the removal of the conditions on their stay. As this process takes four years, none of the refugees for whom you have statistics have yet been accepted for settlement. Only the Vietnamese refugees were accepted for settlement on arrival.

The figures for other immigration are freely. available. I think you will find the information you need in the 1981 edition of 'Control of Immigration Statistics' I enclose a copy.
