BACKGROUND NOTE
1.
Chimawan Closed Centre.
All the educational classes
for Vietnamese refugees are organised and supervised jointly
by the Salvation Army and Correctional Services Department.
17 refugees are employed as teachers, 15 of whom have received
post-secondary education or teacher training in Vietnam.
They are directly supervised by a Correctional Services
Department teacher. The Department's Education Officer, who
runs the Department's educational programme, advises and gives
guidance. In the Chimawan Lower Centre, 18 classes have 640
participants while in the Upper Centre there are 6 classes with

The syllabuses include
English language, French (for some classes only), Chinese,
Vietnamese, mathematics and art.

Hei Ling Chau Closed Centre.
The Correctional Services
Departemnt and 3 Vietnamese refugees employed as teachers have
organised 6 language classes (5 English and 1 Chinese) for single
male Vietnamese refugees. A French class has also recently been
introduced. A total of 270 participants.
