BACKGROUND NOTE

1. As usual, the totals include the 422 Vietnamese

refugees who had been settled in China and who subse-

quently entered Hong Kong illegally. Of these 422, 8

have been in Hong Kong for 3 years or more, 4 for 2 years

or more, 439 for one year or more and 61 for less than

one year. 328 will be repatriated to China on 17 December.
