Meanwhile, CHAI Shufan, Chairman of the recently formed China State Shipbuilidng Corporation, has said that the country plans to build several million tons of ships a year and to rank as a leading shipbuilding country, despite the present recession in shipping and shipbuilding. Corporation, in fact, has the same status as a ministry, a clear indication of the way in which the State Council wants
the industry to go.

Presently, much of the input on Chinese-built ships has to be imported, but according to CHAI, the Corporation hopes to supply about 80% of the ancillary equipment for export ships by 1935.

China already has a substantial and experienced shipbuilding industry with 26 major shipyards, but modernisa- tion is essential if the yards in Dalian, Shanghai and Guangzhou are to compete with Japanese and Koreans on levels other than price.

To help meet this demand for knowledge of modern
techniques, a new Chines: language publication is to be produced early next year by Asian Shipping, the Hong Kong-
based regional shipping journal. The name of the new annual, Modern Marine Technology, gives the clue to the nature of
the articles which will specialiss on hull design, shipyard techniques, engine-building and operation and other speci- alist marine topics.
