A 22 year old male Vietnamese apprentice electrician organised this group in Qui Nhon, Central Vietnam. Members of the group left Vietnam on 16th July 1982 in a small vessel powered by a 7HP engine. On the fifth day at sea and with only ten litres of fuel remaining the engine broke down and they were forced to hoist a sail,

After they had been at sea for 13 days they ran into stormy weather which blew them off course and into Chinese waters. On the seventeenth day the storm abated, and they sailed on a bearing of 10°NW until the nineteenth day when they met a Chinese fishing vessel. This vessel towed them to Shantou where, after interview by a Vietnamese- speaking official believed to be from the Public Security Bureau, they were accommodated in a three-storey building. They remained there for 51 days.

On 25th September the refugees were conveyed to their boat which had by now been repaired. The Chinese authorities placed a further group of 10 refugees on board and gave them fuel and provisions. They then set out for Hong Kong.
