and Peking on immediately connecting services. This practice infringes the conditions of the operating permit which serves to give effect to the provisions for the regulation of capacity on services between Hong Kong and Shanghai and Peking which are embodied in the Confidential Memoranda of Understanding of 1979, 1981 and 1982.
We look forward to the resolution of this matter as soon as possible and I should therefore like to take this opportunity to confirm the invitation I extended to you at our meeting in March to resume our discussions in London in the early autumn. For this purpose I would propose the week commencing 20 October, and should be pleased to learn shortly whether this would be convenient to you and your colleagues,
Meanwhile, since we have no wish to inconvenience passengers during the summer season, I have arranged for CAAC's permits for services to Tianjin and Nanjing to be extended up to
31 October on the same basis as at present and for CAAC to be granted two extra sections a week for services from Tianjin to Hong Kong and vice versa for the same period."
Ends.
I am sending a copy of this letter for information to the Western European Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
