The land borrow requirements for this alternative are shown in Table 8-4. It appears that additional soft material sources (for the bedding course, overfill, select fill and special fill) will be required beyond those available in sources identified by the NTDC report. This material is also assumed to be obtained from within the Castle Peak Firing Range.

ORDER OF MAGNITUDE ESTIMATES
It should be noted that these site preparation estimates are based on a very limited amount of data and do not include costs for airport development or obstruction removal. Cost ranges are developed with lower and upper indications drawn from the all-borrow case versus the borrow/imported fill case.
6.1
Orders of costs are based on 1979 cost data from the Chek Lap Kok study. Table 8-5 is a summary of the approximate site preparation cost for the land borrow case. A lump sum site clearance item of $2 million for the borrow areas has been assumed. The unit rate for soil excavation is that for excavating decomposed granite and rippable rock at Chek Lap Kok.
6.2
For the case using marine sand as fill, a quotation of $65/cu.m. (July 1981) has been obtained from the local supplier of Chinese river sand. An all-in value of $100/cu.m. for the supply and placing of marine sand is assumed. This represents the upper
limit of the rate. On the other hand, if the dredging of marine sand from nearby sources and its placing were performed by the airport construction contractor, a unit rate of $30/cu. (excluding royalty) has been assumed as a lowest value. Table 8-6 shows a summary of the site preparation costs with the above price ranges.
