5. TIDAL CONSIDERATONS
According to tide tables (Ref. 4), the mean high high water level at
Tsim Bei Tsui is 0.6 m higher than that at the Hong Kong Harbour (measured at
North Point) while the mean low low water is 0.2 m higher at Tsim Bei Tsui than
at North Point. It is understood that the differences mentioned above are based
on fairly scanty data.
A tide gauge was installed by the Port Works Division at Tsim Bei Tsui
in April 1974. The highest water level recorded so far was 3.55 metres (hourly
reading) which occurred on 13 October 1974 when Typhoon Bess was about 190
nautical miles south of Hong Kong.
