(b) RHKAAF Flights
Several investigation flights using a Bulldog aircraft were made by the
Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force in October 1981. The pilots reported their
assessment of the severity of turbulence encountered and the accelerometer values.
The flight on 8 October 1981 took place in southeasterly winds of around
10 knots (Fig. 10). The accelerometer values (relative to the datum of 1 g)
reported on the Fan Ling Lau Fau Shan leg were smaller than those observed
near Chek Lap Kok.

A cold front passed south across Hong Kong during the night of 8 October
and the flight on 9 October 1981 was flown under northerly monsoon conditions with
wind speed reaching 35 knots at flight level during part of the flight (Fig. 11).
The flight from Fan Ling to Deep Bay was fairly smooth apart from a short spell
of turbulence with accelerometer readings within a range of +0.5 g and -0.4 g near
Kai Kung Leng. Much more turbulence was reported to the east of Chek Lap Kok which
was downstream of hills over the New Territories. Strong up and down draft were
encountered with accelerometer readings reaching +1.0 g and -1.5 g at times.
Another flight took place in northerly winds on 13 October 1981 (Fig. 12).
The wind speed was around 15 knots. There was again a short spell of turbulence
(accelerometer reading up to +0.4 g) near Kai Kung Leng. When the aircraft was
