In his letter to Mr Holmes of 9 September Mr Coles listed

three points which the Prime Minister had raised in relation to

the Hong Kong Study to be brought to the attention of those at

the meeting of officials at No 10 at 11.30 on 10 September.

2.

Point (b), concerning statements of commitment by HMG

to the people of Hong Kong, was dealt with last night and you

will have received some material thereon.

3.

Attached is material on points (a) and (c) - the PRC's

awareness of the need to preserve Hong Kong's capitalist structure

and the PRC's position on Taiwan. This could be used at the

Prime Minister's meeting with officials today.
