Thank you for your telegram and letter of 15 June. We quite understand and accept why a later rather than earlier call on the Prime Minister would be better. The idea of bringing it forward came up partly because No 10 thought it might be helpful if you saw Mrs Thatcher before a meeting which she will have with Y K Pao on 13 July. But that is not critical.
The proposal now is that you should call on the Prime Minister at 11.00 am on Friday, 23 July. I hope that would be all right. I think the Secretary of State would also welcome a chance to see you before that. 11.00 am on Wednesday, 21 July, has been pencilled in his diary. Could you manage that? I take it your ceremony in the Lords will be in the afternoon.
On present planning your talk with the Prime Minister would be the first time that the substance of the problem is put to her directly (apart from papers which she has not had time to study yet). I will of course let you know if this alters in the next few weeks.
We are of course very grateful for your help. Please let me know if the plans do not suit. I hope that you are having a thoroughly relaxing time. It must be lovely in Kerry at
present.
