Huan Xiang speaks English well. He was the first Charge to Britain, holding the post for almost eight years, and had studied at the LSE in the thirties.
Shortly after his appointment as a Vice-President of the Academy of Social Sciences, Huan specified his main fields of interest as the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, economics, and industrial management. He has led several delegations abroad since 1978, including one to Britain in 1980.-
He is able, well disposed and politically well connected. His academy has a direct link to Deng Xiaoping.
