New Governor of Hongkong takes office Yakovlev, "Together with the colonialists") Foreign correspondents report that the 26th (Excerpts from commentary by Mikhail Governor has entered office in imperial luxury in Hongkong, the British colony on Chinese soil. The new Governor Edward Youde, who previously served as the British Ambassador in Peking, was greeted by a guard of honour of crack Gurkha infantrymen and an artillery salute. Circling overhead were planes of the Royal Air Force. This lavish ceremony was staged on land seized from China 140 years ago and right in front of Peking's eyes. Officially the PRC government does not recognize the colonial status of Hongkong and views it as Chinese territory temporarily under foreign administration. But in reality, observers from many countries note, the Peking leadership is interested in the preservation of the present colonial status of Hongkong which brings it considerable benefits. The Chinese leaders give Hongkong a special place in the fulfilment of plans to modernize the Chinese economy and view it as a goose that lays golden eggs in the form of dollars. [Passage omitted]
Then there is yet another reason why Peking does not want even to hear about the decolonization of Hongkong. A "special economic zone" is being created in Guangdong Province in areas adjoining the colony... Thus a zone of "free enterprise" is being created next to the British colony in the south of China. But actually it is a new colony in which Chinese working people will be exploited by the monopolists from capitalist countries and Hongkong. So by facilitating the preservation of the colonial status of Hongkong, by strengthening and expanding financial, economic and other ties with it the Chinese leaders are inflicting damage to the cardinal interests of the Chinese people.
