FUTURE OF HONG KONG : TAIWAN CURRENCY

1. The Secretary of State asked last week what currency the Chinese envisaged for Taiwan under their reunification policy.

2. I have checked with FED but the position is unclear. Currency is not specifically mentioned in Ye Jianying's 9-Point Proposal. The closest references therein are:

(a)

'Taiwan's current socio-economic system will remain unchanged';

(b) 'When Taiwan's local finance is in difficulty the central government may subsidize it as is fit for the circumstances'.

This seems to suggest that the Chinese do not object to the continuation of the present Taiwanese dollar.
