FUTURE OF HONG KONG: 'ECONOMIST SEMINAR
STA
291
I have arhed EID for some material.
(See 298) of 2715 cf2775
1. Sir Jack Cater telephoned to say that he had received a number of indications that at the seminar Mr Dick Lee would take a line broadly advocating a measure of Chinese involvement in the administration of Hong Kong. Sir Jack's later informant was Judge T L Yang.
2. Sir Jack asked whether we could provide him with some thoughts on the question of support for the Hong Kong currency and possible dangers of a slide in its value. So far we have talked in general terms about this risk. Sir Jack will try to get some ideas from Mr Brembridge tomorrow but he would be grateful to know whether anyone in the FCO could give him more precise briefing which he could if necessary deploy at the seminar.
3. I said we would think about this and come back. Would the Economists Department be able to help?
4.
I think we must also have a general meeting with Sir Jack before the Economist seminar in order to try to give him guidance on the best line to take. I should like to discuss this when you are ready.
