1. As requested, I attach a brief account of the acquisition of Hong Kong by Britain (Annex A). This has been extracted from the draft of a research paper on the Chinese attitude to Hong Kong; completion of this has been delayed because of staffing constraints, but a tabulation of the more important Chinese statements on Hong Kong since 1963 was prepared at the end of last year. I attach a copy of this, together with my covering minute to Mr Elliott dated 23 December (Annex B). (1981)
