"The future of H.K. and you" Conference
香港的
與你研討會
I attended the above Conference at the Newcastle
University on 27th February, 1982(Saturday). The Conference was organized by the U.K. Federation of H.K. Students, New- castle University Chinese Students Society Branch and attended by some 60 students, some of whom came from Bradford, Leeds and Loughborough.
2. According to the Chairman of the organizers, K.C. TONG (b), a naval architecture student, this conference aimed to be a follow-up of an earlier one held at Bradford- " 香港現況之探討 #1 It also hoped to arouse the awareness of Hong Kong Students' interest in Hong Kong affairs. Three invited speakers were to talk on the following subjects:-
(i) Development of people's organizations in Hong Kong for the past ten years' (B+4* R * D 1 2 2.
(香港過往十年來民眾团体之屐 by FUNG Kim-ki(5), ex-President of U.K. Federation of
H.K. Students.
(ii) 'Pressure grups in Hong Kong (656 by StÙ Kin-wan(蕭建 a Leeds University Student.
(iii) 'To assess our direction from the structure of the H.K. Government' (*19 155 BSTO 路向
) by LEE Chung-keung( 1 ), a Manchester Polytechnic Student.

3. In my opinion, apart from purely academic interest, only FUNG's talk had any substance. The third talk in particular was rather badly presented. Not only did the speaker have no real knowledge of the structure of the HKG, some of the contents of his talk was rather irrelevant to the topic he was given to speak on.
4. FUNG gave a brief account of the social development in Hong Kong. In the fifties, according to him, there were no 'real' organized movements of the people. Most of the people had just arrived from China, having experienced a world war and a civil war and were keen to establish new life in Hong Kong. The sixties, however, was a transitional period with enormous economic changes and the emergence of the middle class. In the seventies, people's and protest movements began to emerge and he quoted the following examples:-
