FUTURE OF HONG KONG AND POSSIBLE SLIDE IN CONFIDENCE
1.
I read Mr Mallaby's minutes of 26 February and 9 March with interest. I have written to Mr McLaren asking him to let us have Hong Kong's views on the subject of financial contingency planning once he has seen Mr Mallaby on 21 March in Hong Kong and discussed the question with him. I should be happy to discuss these issues with you and Mr Plender and also with Mr Broadbent of ESID, to whom I am copying this minute and Mr Mallaby's of 9 March. But I suggest that we might usefully await receipt of Mr McLaren's views on the subject first.
