5. I said that the delegation was quite pleased with the arrangements made here, because there were a couple of very small wrinkles. Mr Adley, who seemed to be very jealous of Mr Whitney's local expertise, complained on at least three occasions of the protocol seating arrangements. delegation were slightly disappointed that the Ambassador's briefing lunch could not (in spite of my best endeavours)
This was because take place before the Saturday, 13 March. the Chinese had told me that they wanted to take the delegation to the Wall and Tombs on 12 March, as certain enterprises they wanted to show them in Peking would be closed on that day. In the end, they only took the party However, I think to one industrial enterprise in Peking. the delegation were very appreciative of the Ambassador's briefing, during which we, inter alia, had to explain to them some of the reasons why British business has been less successful in China than German.
6. It would be fair to say that our Parliamentarians came to China with great enthusiasm to learn, and with great confidence in their ability to make a considerable contribution to the all-round improvement of Anglo-Chinese relations. As they are still in the provinces, it would be rash of me to try to determine what progress they will have made towards these goals by the time they leave China.
