1. In his letter of 18 December Mr Coles at No.10 asked for advice on a possible invitation by the Prime Minister to the Chinese Ambassador at some time in the near future. He also mentioned that Sir Y-K Pao had spoken to the Prime Minister about the possibility of an invitation to the UK for the Vice Premier, Gu Mu. Sir E Youde discussed these points and others with the Prime Minister on 23 December and undertook to send written advice.
