BACKGROUND NOTE

1.

During her visit to Hong Kong, the Prime Minister:

a. met the Unofficial Members of the Executive and

Legislative Councils at a meeting and again at

dinner on 27 September;

b. met representatives of the Services (including

Hong Kong seamen and their families) on 28 September;

c. attended on 27 September a lunch hosted by the

Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese

Manufacturers Association and the Federation of

Hong Kong Industries;

d. met a group of Hong Kong businessmen on the afternoon

of 27 September;

e. attended a civic reception at Government House, where

she met:

i. the Commonwealth Commissioners;

ii. a group of Urban Councillors;

iii. Urban District Board Members;

iv. New Territories District Board Members;

v. Members of the Heung Yee Kuk;

vi. Representatives of the Hong Kong Observers, Zonta,

British Council and UNHCR;

vii. Traditional community leaders;

viii. The media;

ix. Leading businessmen.
