PRIME MINISTER TO VISIT JAPAN, CHINA AND HONG KONG

16-29 SEPTEMBER 1982

The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Margaret Thatcher MP 7 China and Hong Kong between 16 and 29 September 1982,

will visit Japan,

JAPAN

The Prime Minister will visit Japan as the guest of the Japanese Govern- ment from 17 to 22 September. During her visit she hopes to have an audience of the Emperor and talks with Prime Minister Suzuki and his Government, will stay in Tokyo. Mrs Thatcher last visited Japan in June 1979 when she attended the Economic Summit.

The Prime Minister will visit China as the guest of the People's Republic from 22 to 26 September, This will be the first visit to China by a Prime Minister in office although Mrs Thatcher visited China in 1977 as

HONG KONG

From Shanghai the Prime Minister will travel to Hong Kong where she will stay from 26 to 28 September. This will be the first visit to the Territory

by a Prime Minister in office.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

In Tokyo and Peking Mrs Thatcher will have discussions on international political developments, with particular reference to Asian questions and for example to relations with the Soviet Union. She will also discuss bilateral questions including trade relations and opportunities for British business. In Japan there will be a particularly strong economic content to her dis- cussions, covering such areas as industrial and technological collaboration.
