Visit of Sir E Youde and Unofficials in September

We have provisionally booked appointment with Prime Minister for 12.30 on Wednesday 8 September. But this cannot be confirmed with No 10 until Monday (16 August) when Private Office resume.

We have also provisionally arranged calls on Lord Belstead at 15.00 hours on 7 September and on Secretary of State at 16.00 hours on 7 September. The call on the SoS is likewise subject to confirmation when Private Office resume on Monday.

Would these timings suit, if confirmed?

PM's Programme in Hong Kong

As Governor knows, No 10 have already approved the programme for Hong Kong.

Sir John Burgh, Director-General of British Council, has just written to Lord Gordon-Lennox, copy to John Coles in No 10, asking if a slot could be fitted in the PM's programme for her to see something of British Council operations in Hong Kong. It seems to us that there is no room in the programme and, subject to Governor's views, we would propose to draft reply stating this. But it would be helpful to know whether PM will have opportunity to meet British Council rep. and any other staff during her visit eg, at reception or dinner.

If so, we could include this in reply.

Accreditation of small number of Hong Kong journalists for covering PM's visit in Peking

FED recommend, subject to No 10 views. Ian Kydd of No 10 told Richard Hoare that No 10 would not object but he thought that

any UK journalists in Hong Kong not already travelling with PM should be afforded similiar facility.

If Hong Kong Chinese journalists from Hong Kong can go to Peking anyway, on balance, I think better that they be accredited if possible, to save incident of ill feelings). What are Governor's

views?
