In Hong Kong telno 565 to FCO you propose that the Prime Minister should arrive in Hong Kong on the afternoon of 26 September, and refer to the next day as the first day of her visit to Hong Kong. However, in planning Mrs Thatcher's visit to China, we have assumed (following the outline in FCO telno 165) that Mrs Thatcher would fly to Shanghai on the morning of 25 September and after a visit of about 24 hours she would fly to Hong Kong on the morning of 26 September. We have not proposed any programme in Shanghai on 26 September to the Chinese and, assuming that the Prime Minister could leave for Hong Kong at about 10 am, she would arrive in Hong Kong at lunch time.

2. No doubt you will let us know whether that seems convenient; as seen from here, it could well be useful for Mrs Thatcher to have a free afternoon in Hong Kong.
