March 1982, appointed Assistant Secretary for Ruritanian Affairs, State Department on Parker's recommendation though after some infighting over other, related appointments.
Quiet family man who does not seek the limelight.
Married to Pamela Wojtyla, a leading left-wing journalist.
Has 5 children.
