PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO THE FAR EAST: SEPTEMBER 1982

SEPTEMBER

1.

Please refer to Mr Holmes' minute of 30 June requesting that we start afresh on giving advice to No 10 on which routes the Prime Minister's aircraft should take outward and return on her Far Eastern tour.

2. Before I can initiate the submission requested by Mr Holmes, one question will have to be resolved, and that is whether or not the FCO clearly recommends that the Prime Minister cuts short the programme in Hong Kong in order to facilitate a possible meeting with Mrs Gandhi on the return through Delhi. I would be grateful for advice, following consultation with Hong Kong and General Department.

3. I would also be grateful for confirmation from EESD and FED that the advice given earlier regarding the outward route and a possible stop in Moscow, still stands.
