PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO JAPAN, CHINA AND HONG KONG
1. Mr Coles in No 10 told me two or three weeks ago that he
would be grateful for a letter about the general shape of the
Prime Minister's Far Eastern tour before long, to enable us to
discover the Prime Minister's own wishes. We also need to
give the Embassies in Tokyo and Peking some more guidance about the likely timing.

2. I have consulted PCD, largely on the question of feasible
timings for the RAF aircraft. EESD and MED also have an interest, the former in the possibility of the Prime Minister's travelling
out to the Far East via Moscow (a submission is being considered
at departmental level), and the latter in the possible use which
might be made of a re-fueling stop by the Prime Minister's aircraft in the Gulf on the return journey. I do not think that
these possibilities need to be put to No 10 at this stage.
3. I submit a draft Private Secretary letter. PCD and HKGD
concur.
