Until recently most new vessels for Hong Kong owners have been built in Japanese yards whose prices and deliveries could not normally be matched by UK yards. In the past couple of years Hong Kong shipowners have turned increasingly to the UK and there are currently 19 orders placed in BS yards by Hong Kong-based owners. This turn around has been due to several factors - - more aggressive marketing through British Shipbuilders' office
in the Colony, more competitive pricing which has
resulted from the use of the Intervention Fund
subsidy, and recent evidence that UK yards have become much more competitive on delivery.
