The management style and organisation of NEI give individual companies and business units the responsibility for trading in their specialist markets, but in appropriate situations the group is geared to bring its total capability to bear on specific projects, using the services of NEI Projects Ltd. For example, NEI Projects is currently bidding for the Singrauli 2 power station contract in India.
(The attached leaflet summarises the scope and organisations of the group).
NEI POWER ENGINEERING LTD.
This company manufactures fossil-fired power station boilers for the home market and steam generators for nuclear power plants.
Its current main contracts are the steam generators for the AGR nuclear power stations at Heysham 2 and Torness (CEGB and SSEB) and assembly of replacement reheater and superheater tube bundles for the demonstration fast reactor at Dounreay (AEA). The Prime Minister will see aspects of both contracts, including the factory-built nature of the present generation of AGR steam generators. Over £8 million has been invested in radical re-equipment and extension to this plant alone. Because of time limitations the factory visit will cover only 4 and 5 bays.
No. 4 Bay is a highly mechanised facility in which newly-received tube is welded to length, bent and formed into platens, assembled, examined and subjected to annealing.
Fixed station orbital welders developed in-house weld the tubes into lengths. A CNC tube bending machine draws in the tube and bends it into platens. Robot machines weld spacer pieces to stabilise the platens and will make some eight million welds during the course of the AGR contract. The annealing oven is designed to take large assembled modules.
The adjoining 5 Bay is a 'clean conditions' area where all personnel and visitors wear white overalls (conventional white coats) and disposable paper overshoes. The bay is lightly pressurised to exclude contamination from outside.
From 5 bay the heater and reheater AGR units will go to site as ready-assembled packages weighing up to 120 tonnes.
