PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO THE NORTH EAST: 12 MARCH 1982
Thank you for your letter of 3 February.
2 As requested, I enclose a general brief on the North East (I understand that DOE are to provide separate notes on their interests) together with briefs on NEI, Austin and Pickersgill and British Shipbuilders.
3 After the "ribbon-cutting" ceremony at NEI, the Prime Minister may care to refer to some of the points on the first page of this Department's brief on the company. She may also like to refer to the firm's practice of signing major contracts on the shop floor rather than in the Board room since this demonstrates the involvement of both management and labour in the continued success of the firm. After the launch, she may care to draw on Sections A2-4 and C of the Austin & Pickersgill brief.
