The other major projects in the district are the Kowloon Canton Railway electrification, and a comprehensive study on landscape and recreation.
Road works are under way for the construction of the Sha Tin Tai Po Coastal Road, as part of the New Territories Circular Road, and for the planned Yuen Long Bypass.
Proposals have also been made to extend the Kowloon Canton Railway from the district to Yuen Long.
The total estimated expenditure by Government on this new town is $2,000 million.
SAT KUNG This rural township is being developed to accommodate a population of 14,000 at an estimated cost of $686 million.
JUNK BAY ・ This could be regarded as a third-generation new town, with 450 hectares of its area of 513 hectares obtained through reclamation.
The town is different from earlier new towns, which were developed either from market towns or rural centres. The area is a remote small town at the southeast tip of the Kowloon Peninsula with an existing population of only 13,000 people. It is cut off from Kwun Tong by the terrain and to develop the new town, the proposed MTR link to Kwun Tong is thought essential.
To provide accommodation for 329,000 people, a massive housing project is planned which would create homes for 150,000 people in public estates, while another 85,000 people would live in HOS flats.
The town is expected to be completed by 1996, and is designed around an extension of the WTR, with the population centres near the four planned stations.
