LORD BELSTEAD'S VISIT TO HONG KONG : SUGGESTIONS BY

MR HAL MILLER MP

I understand that Mr Hal Miller has rung up to suggest that arrangements should be made for Lord Belstead to see the Hong Kong Observers and the Hong Kong Young Presidents' Association during his visit to Hong Kong. I understand also that he will be calling back on the morning of 2 December.

You may wish to make the following points to Mr Miller:

Lord Belstead has a very full programme in Hong Kong and it would not be possible to add any additional meetings at this stage;

Lord Belstead will be attending a Community Dinner organised by Mr Bray, the Secretary for Home Affairs, and Mr Akers-Jones, the Secretary for District Administration, at which he will meet a number of community leaders. We have already asked the Hong Kong Government to include the Hong Kong Observers in the guest list for this or for a dinner at Government House;

Lord Belstead is also meeting a selection of Hong Kong businessmen and various other community leaders such as District Board members and the Heung Yee Kuk. I am not sure who is in the Hong Kong Young Presidents's Association, but it is quite possible that he will meet some of the members on these occasions;

We are of course grateful for Mr Miller's interest and advice.

I imagine that by now the guest lists for the various social functions have been finalised, and that it would therefore be very difficult to add any of the members of these two groups. Lord Belstead could of course raise this with the Governor on his arrival if he wishes.
