(b) Teacher Training

The Council runs termly courses for Chinese Primary School

Teachers of English on behalf of the Education Department.

Courses are also held annually each summer for Chinese

Secondary School Teachers of English. Training for native

speaking teachers of English is conducted through the medium of

the Royal Society of Arts Preparatory and Further Education Certificates in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language.

(c) The Arts

Hong Kong is rapidly developing as a major cultural centre and

the Council has a busy role acting as middle man between Britain

and the Hong Kong Government, the Urban Council and other bodies

in facilitating the import of British Arts and expertise.

In

1981, exhibitions of the work of Hogarth and Hockney, Paolozzi

and Paul Nash were held. The Chung Ying Theatre Company, which was set up by the Council in 1979, performed 2 plays in City Hall, toured Malaysia and completed a full programme of performances in schools.

Books/Library

The Council is developing and improving its own library and film library and has close links with the library profession in Hong Kong and British Publishers.

(e) Educational Exchanges

The

There is an expanding programme of academic and technical

exchange of persons. The British Council postgraduate

scholarships programme has been reinstated (15 in 1981). Council's Higher Education Division, which incorporates the former Inter-University Council, administers short-term visits between Britain and the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (26 in 1981).
