Castle Peak Transmission Project

associated with
Castle Peak 'A' is a new transmission network to
distribute the electricity generated to the whole of Kowloon and the New Territories. Project value is
£170 million.
UK Companies involved are GEC Turbine Generators
(turbines), Babcock Power Ltd (boilers), L G Movehel
& Partners (civil design), British Electricity International (advisory services) and Balfour Beatty
(transmission line). GEC are the main contractor.
HMG Involvement The Department of Industry have taken
the leading role in coordinating the successful
presentation of unique packages of proposals from the UK
for both the Castle Peak 'A' and 'B' contracts.
(ii) PROPOSED NEW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The Hong Kong Government is considering building a new airport at Chek Lap Kok (adjacent to Lantau Island), to replace the existing airport at Kai Tak, expected to reach saturation point by 1985.
The decision to proceed should be taken within 18 months - a vital factor being the status of the territory after
1997. The project value is estimated to be £1 billion
with a potential UK content of £250 million. A US
consultant firm (Parsons), with the UK Civil Aviation
Authority, are currently preparing a master plan for the project, and a civil engineering study.
Projects and Exports Policy Division of the Department of Trade has had discussions with a proposed UK consortium, including Taylor Woodrow, GEC and Lazards, on how the
project might best be pursued to maximise UK involvement. To date efforts have been directed towards pursuading
the Hong Kong Government of the merits of a negotiated
turnkey contract. However, it is likely that the
