Ballet, like all art, depends for its survival on its ability to receive change and experiment with new forms but one thing remains constant and that is the rigorous discipline required in its teaching. From the very early stages children have to be guided carefully along the pathways which lead to mastery of techni- que. Nowadays there are several responsible teach- ing bodies which have established syllabi as a means of grading the development of learning and these syllabi are taught and examined on an international basis. Hong Kong is fortunate in having many ballet schools whose pupils have done well in examina- tions. Even more important than success in examina- tions is to foster the growth of the dancing art and to introduce it to the masses for their appreciation and enjoyment.
Undoubtedly one of the reasons for the universal appeal of ballet is its visual impact which can be appreciated in any language. Ballet is enjoying increasing popularity in Hong Kong and for many years Hong Kong's ballet schools have been expanding. Some students at these schools have much talent but until recently they could not be employed as professional dancers. Today that situation has changed.
The (Hong Kong) Academy of Ballet is a profes- sional ballet school to train students for a career either as a dance teacher or a dancer. The Academy provides all-round training in many aspects of dance, including the history of ballet, anatomy, music appreciation, modern and national folk dance, both European and Chinese. Students enrol for three years and are selected at auditions held twice yearly in
June and August.
Successful students on the dancers' course are offered places in the Academy Ballet Company. There are now fifteen dancers in the Company and the first two students from the school were given contracts this season.
The Academy Ballet Company gave its first major public performances in October 1979 and from the beginning dancers and choreographers have been invited who have produced ballets and danced with the company. Both dancers and audiences benefit from these visits: the dancers from working and talking with different people, the audiences from the new ballets which are presented. These ballets, acclaimed internationally, are now being shown in Hong Kong for the first time and new audiences are discovering the variety of emotion that can be displayed through the medium of dance.
The Academy Ballet Company gives many per- formances in the New Territories and has been delighted by the response to its visits to schools. Also, the Academy of Ballet is interested in the training of young children and has given as much assistance as possible in setting up beginners ballet classes to young, enthusiastic children.
The demand for the expansion of these classes has been proof of their popularity. Dancing is a means of exercise in the crowded living conditions of Hong Kong but it provides much more as children develop graceful movement and posture, discipline through the concentration necessary to achieve perfection in steps and appreciation of music and art as things of beauty in a less than beautiful world.
