LORD PRIVY SEAL'S VISIT TÓ HONG KONG
As I explained to you on the telephone some time ago I did not reply earlier to your letter of 31 March because the issue of textile exports to Hong Kong was due to be discussed at the Hong Kong Trade Advisory Group meeting on 22 April.
I attach a copy of a note written by Muriel Gingell which sets out the follow- up action to the Parkinson mission that was taken by both the Department of Trade and the textiles industry. At the last meeting the members of HKTAG showed themselves ready to take up the cudgels on this subject once again and it was suggested that a way forward might be to invite members of the textiles industry, say from the National Wool Textiles Export Corporation to a HKTAG meeting so that the problems facing them in Hong Kong could be aired. Also the Department of Industry are starting an initiative of their own. They are to invite members of the textiles industry and other interested parties to a meeting which is to take place on 18 May in order to discuss exports of textiles to Hong Kong. Clearly these two proposals may overlap and we will need to see how HKTAG can compliment rather than duplicate the Department of Industry initiative.
I cannot at this stage say whether this action will lead anywhere but I shall keep you informed of progress if you would find it useful.
Yours ever,
David
