As part of a familiarisation tour to the Far East, I

visited Peking from 4 to 7 January at the invitation of

the Chinese Government. I had two meetings with Mr Zhang

Canming, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and I called

of common concern and on bilateral matters. On Hong Kong

Premier Zhao renewed Vice-Premier Deng Xiaoping's

assurances to investors. My understanding is that the

Chinese Government fully recognise the importance of Hong

Kong's continuing prosperity and when in due course they

address themselves to the question of Hong Kong's future,

a free port and a commercial and financial centre. We also

talked about some practical matters concerning Hong Kong,

particularly cooperation in the Special Economic Zone in
