1. Under the Defence Costs Agreement between the

Ministry of Defence and the Hong Kong Government signed

in 1980, the Hong Kong Garrison is being expanded from

four to five Battalions. Initially, the 5th Battalion

will be a Gurkha one but it is intended to replace it

with a British Battalion later.

2. No thought has been given to what might happen to the

Garrison after 1997. There are more important issues to

be resolved before that one.
