Prime Minister secured a substantial success in getting
agreement with Chinese to begin talks with the common
aim of maintaining Hong Kong's stability and prosperity.
This was welcomed in Hong Kong, where Prime Minister
made it clear that Britain takes its responsibility for
Hong Kong's people very seriously and that their views
will be taken into account.
Meetings to follow up the visit have begun in Peking
through diplomatic channels. Governor is being consulted
throughout and will participate as necessary.
Executive Council in Hong Kong being kept closely in the
picture.
