Background Note

The Hong Kong Trade Advisory Group is actively pursuing the promotion of general exports to Hong Kong with special emphasis on six non-project sectors which have been identified as having potential for increasing UK exports. These are: textiles, quality consumer goods, electronics, construction, computer software and oil exploration

services.

Projects are still a vital aspect of the Hong Kong market. Projects under consideration include a new airport, Lantau Island to mainland link, Lye Mun Bridge, Mass Transit Railway extension.

Agree that UK textile sales to Hong Kong have been disappointing. HMG has made strong efforts to encourage UK textile exporters to sell more to Hong Kong. There has been little response from the industry. but a fresh initiative is being considered by the HK Trade Advisory Group for 1983.

There has been considerable follow up action since the Parkinson Textile Mission '80, including recent meetings between officials of the Department of Trade and Industry with members of the Hong Kong Government Office in London and representatives from the UK textile
