HONG KONG NEW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The Hong Kong Government is considering building a new airport at Chek Lap Kok (adjacent to Lantau Island), to replace the existing airport at Kai Tak expected to reach saturation point by 1985.

The decision to proceed should be taken within the next 18 months a material factor being the status of the territory after 1997. The project value is estimated to be £1 billion with a potential UK content of £250 million. A US consultant firm (Parsons), with the UK Civil Aviation Authority, are currently preparing a master plan for the project, and a civil engineering study.
TRANSPORT PROJECTS
BACKGROUND
Mass Transit Railway: The MTR is one of the UK's major transport successes in recent years, with British companies eg Metro Cammell picking up substantial contracts, particularly in the supply field.
Lantau Island to Mainland Link: A £300m proposal to construct three bridges linking Lantau with the mainland is an important one for Hong Kong as it is the key to the development of Lantau Island where proposals for the new airport and industrial development may cost as much as £10 billion.
Tuen Mun Light Rail Vehicle: Government approach has been given for the construction of a new light rail system at a cost of $600m.
Lye Mun Bridge: Mott Hay and Anderson with Wilbur Smith Associates completed a design study for a bridge to carry a rail link. The contract will probably be worth £60-70 million.
China Road Project: A feasibility study for the construction of a road between Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Canton) with a separate spur to Macau has been completed. Hopewell (HK) have an agreement with the Chinese Government to enter into a joint venture for the project.
