DEFENCE COMMITTEE
28th January, 1982
>
My Committee are considering their long term plans and hope that they may be able to make a visit to Hong Kong, Japan and the United States between 5 and 21 July of this year.
At this stage, I do not wish to ask formally for assistance in planning the visit, but it would be helpful to have your advice on whether the dates proposed (5-10 July
(Hong Kong) 11-17 July (Japan) 18-21 July (Washington) would pose any problem. Our aim would be to examine the role and conditions of British Forces in Hong Kong; to meet the Defence Committee of the Japanese Diet and see military installations in Japan and to meet the Congressional Armed Services Committees and possibly visit McDonnell Douglas or other major defence equipment manufacturers in the United States.
