Thank you for sending me a copy of your minute of 24 May about the plans for the House of Commons Select Committee on

Defence to visit Washington, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Brunei.

2. As you will see from Mr Elliott's minute below, we will

be happy to give oral briefing for the Japanese part of this

trip. I also think it right that the briefing for Hong Kong

and Brunei should be oral. (But see Mr. Clift's minute below)

3. I would be happy to talk to the Committee on Japan, Hong

Kong and Brunei. I assume that this would be confidential background briefing and not the kind of session which would appear in published minutes afterwards?

4.

If the meeting took place before the Select Committee's departure on 28 June, I ought to warn you that I will be away

from the Office all day on Thursday, 24 June.
