director of one of the largest Indonesian State owned bank
and from that there followed first class relationships which
have been helpful to the United Kingdom. It was very useful
some months ago. The young lady in question has died but
the goodwill has proceeded and is very strong.

It is a very good general point. We take a
lot of people for training from overseas. I was trying to think
of an example in the area. We have had people from the hai
banks. Probably the most prolific examples come from China
where we have had contracts from the Bank of China that was and
the amount of business that has come to the United Kingdom
out of that, including orders from ships because of the finance
possibility has been tremendous. I am sure we ought to continue
giving training to those places. On the negative side, one
thing that one runs into amongst your people abroad who have
been trained in other centres, it is easy to find out where
their loyalties lay. There are good examples in Indonesia
of people who are trained in Germany. They are not actually
anti-British but they knowso much more about German industry.
(Mr Goddard I should just like to add a rather
obvious clarification to the benefits of training and training
equals trade. I think it must be borne in mind by individual
countries or educational institutions or the departments of
governments involved that it works extremely well as long as
the respondents of these training courses are well selected.
It can be a monumental waste of money and create problems and
counter productive results, if the wrong individuale or group
of individuals are selected. The training must be properly
