SPEAKING NOTES FOR THE OPENING OF THE HONG KONG EXHIBIT
AT THE COMMONWEALTH INSTITUTE ON 12 OCTOBER

Great pleasure to accept invitation to open exhibit
[regrets that Lord Belstead, the Minister specifically
responsible for Hong Kong, cannot attend]. Thanks to
Sir S Y Chung and Sir Jack Cater. Sir S Y's energy and
efforts on behalf of Hong Kong.
2. [As Sir S Y Chung has said] exhibit represents fruits
of Hong Kong's rapid industrial growth and thriving economy.
Hong Kong's spirit of free enterprise and innovation is a
model for other countries.

Britain also can learn from Hong Kong about economic
we also need to export manufactured goods
to pay for food imports. Hope exhibit will encourage
mutual interchange of ideas.

Great Britain and Hong Kong have enjoyed excellent
relations for many years. Many commercial joint ventures
recently, most notably over the Castle Peak 'A' Power
Station (opened by the Prime Minister on 28 September).
Special relationship also built up through personal contacts
and friendships.

Prime Minister's visit most recent example of this

she was very impressed by the rapid development of Hong Kong
and the warmth and dynamism of its people.
