HONG KONG AND THE COMMONWEALTH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

1.

Your colleague, Mrs Coulson, suggested that I contacted you about the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) and Hong Kong.

2.

According to a story datelined London in the South China Morning Post of 9 December the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee has urged the CDC to make 'vigorous efforts' to withdraw its investment from Hong Kong (as well as from Malaysia and Singapore).

3.

Although there was some debate in the Commons on 7 December when the CDC Bill was read I have not seen any specific reference to Hong Kong either in Hansard of that date or elsewhere, nor have I seen the Select Committee's Report on the subject.

4.

I should be grateful for any information that you can provide both on the South China Morning Post story and on any references to Hong Kong in the Select Committee's Report.
